Should You Ride Steel Vengeance?

Steel Vengeance combines a 205-foot height, 200-foot vertical drop, 74-mph top speed, four inversions, 5,740 feet of track, and almost 30 seconds of airtime into a ride lasting about 2½ minutes. Cedar Point says it delivers more airtime than any other coaster.

What makes it Level 5 isn’t any one of those statistics. It is how relentlessly the ride stacks them together.

Best For

Experienced riders who already know they enjoy strong airtime, steep drops, inversions, fast transitions, and coasters that keep delivering major elements without much recovery time.

Biggest Fear Factor

The relentless airtime and pacing.

Steel Vengeance repeatedly lifts riders against the restraint, changes direction quickly, dives through its wooden structure, and continues delivering major elements well into the second half.

For some riders, the 200-foot first drop may look like the biggest challenge. In practice, the repeated ejector airtime can be far more physically demanding.

CoasterSchool Take

Steel Vengeance is one of Cedar Point’s clearest Level 5 coasters.

The 205-foot height alone would not earn that rating. Magnum is similarly tall and remains Level 4.

Steel Vengeance becomes Level 5 because it combines:

major scale + vertical drop + powerful airtime + four inversions + rapid transitions + extreme length + relentless pacing.

It also demonstrates an important CoasterSchool distinction: Steel Vengeance is very smooth from a track-quality standpoint, yet still extraordinarily intense.

A smooth coaster can absolutely be Level 5.

DID YOU KNOW?

Steel Vengeance was marketed as the world’s first “hyper-hybrid” coaster.

Rocky Mountain Construction transformed the structure of Cedar Point’s former wooden coaster Mean Streak using steel I-Box track, creating a hybrid coaster exceeding 200 feet. It opened in 2018 after Mean Streak had operated from 1991–2016.

ALMOST 30 SECONDS OF AIRTIME

Cedar Point says Steel Vengeance delivers almost 30 seconds of airtime — more than any other roller coaster in the world.

It also features a 200-foot first drop at 90 degrees and four inversions.

What Steel Vengeance Feels Like

Steel Vengeance begins like a massive hypercoaster and gradually becomes something much more aggressive. The first half combines scale, airtime, and inversions; the second half dives into the structure and delivers rapid-fire elements with very little downtime.

The Lift & First Drop

The traditional chain lift climbs 205 feet before the train drops 200 feet straight down at 90 degrees, reaching 74 mph.

The drop is enormous, but it is also smooth and happens quickly. Riders who are already comfortable with 200-foot coasters may discover that the first drop is not actually the most difficult part of Steel Vengeance.

The Airtime & First Half

Steel Vengeance wastes very little time after the first drop.

Large hills, outward-banked elements, rapid direction changes and airtime repeatedly lift riders from their seats. Unlike the longer floating airtime found on many hypercoasters, much of Steel Vengeance’s airtime is quick and aggressive.

The ride also introduces inversions without abandoning the airtime-focused layout.

The Zero-G Stall & Structure

One of the coaster’s signature elements is a zero-G stall, which holds riders upside down while the train travels through the structure.

The wooden framework frequently passes close to the train, creating visual near-misses and making the speed feel even greater.

The Relentless Second Half

After the mid-course brake run, Steel Vengeance does not simply coast back toward the station.

The train dives back into the structure for another sequence of inversions, overbanked turns, quick transitions and repeated airtime hills. The finale includes a rapid series of small airtime hills before the final brakes.

This second half is one of the biggest reasons Steel Vengeance earns Level 5: riders have already experienced a substantial coaster, and the ride continues attacking.

COASTERSCHOOL RIDING TIPS

Tips for a Better Ride

Seat Choice

Steel Vengeance is intense everywhere, but the back generally delivers the strongest pull and most aggressive airtime.

  • Middle rows: Better first choice if you want a slightly more balanced, consistent ride
  • Back rows: Stronger pull over the drops and especially wild airtime through the second half
Body & Restraint

Steel Vengeance uses a lap bar and seat belt, and restraint setup can make a big difference in comfort.

  • Make sure the seat belt is snug before the lap bar is secured
  • Once everything is properly secured, stay relaxed and let the coaster lift you instead of fighting the airtime

COASTERSCHOOL TIP

Let the coaster give you the ride.

During the Ride

The second half is where Steel Vengeance becomes especially relentless.

  • Expect repeated ejector airtime even after the mid-course brake run
  • Don’t assume the big first drop is the hardest part—the quick hills inside the structure can be much more aggressive
