Top Thrill 2 – Cedar Point

Top Thrill 2

Top Thrill 2 is Cedar Point’s 420-foot triple-launch strata coaster and the reimagined version of the former Top Thrill Dragster.

Park: Cedar Point
Location: Sandusky, Ohio
CoasterSchool Intensity Rating: Level 5 — Advanced and Expert-Level Coaster

Ride Overview

Top Thrill 2 is one of Cedar Point’s biggest thrill rides and one of the most intimidating coasters in the park. Instead of one straight launch like the original Top Thrill Dragster, Top Thrill 2 uses a three-launch sequence that sends riders forward, backward, and then forward again over the 420-foot top hat.

This is not a beginner coaster. It is best for riders who are comfortable with extreme height, very fast launches, and a short but intense ride experience.

CoasterSchool Intensity Rating

CoasterSchool rates coaster intensity from Level 1 — First Coaster Steps to Level 5 — Advanced and Expert-Level Coasters.

Intensity Level: Level 5 — Advanced and Expert-Level Coaster

Top Thrill 2 earns a Level 5 rating because of its height, speed, launches, spike, top hat, and extreme visual intimidation. This is one of the clearest examples of a coaster where the mental challenge is a huge part of the rating. The ride is tall, exposed, and dramatic before it even starts.

The actual layout is not long or complicated compared with coasters like Steel Vengeance or Maverick, but the scale makes it feel extreme. Riders experience multiple launches, a massive vertical spike, and a 420-foot top hat. Even if the ride is relatively simple in layout, the anticipation, height, speed, and exposure make it an advanced thrill ride.

Best for: Experienced thrill seekers, launch coaster fans, and riders ready for one of Cedar Point’s biggest mental challenges.

May be too much for: Riders with a strong fear of heights, nervous riders who dislike launches, or anyone not ready for extreme speed and exposure.

Rider progression: Advanced and expert-level coaster / extreme launch and height milestone.

What Makes This Coaster Unique?

Top Thrill 2 stands out because it turns the original Top Thrill Dragster concept into a multi-launch experience. Riders launch forward, roll back, launch backward up a massive spike, and then launch forward again over the 420-foot top hat.

The ride is unique because it keeps the huge visual impact of the original Dragster tower, but adds more anticipation and a more complete launch sequence. The backward launch and vertical spike make the ride feel very different from the original version.

Records and History

Current records: Top Thrill 2 is marketed as the world’s tallest and fastest triple-launch strata coaster.

Former records: As Top Thrill Dragster, this ride was part of Cedar Point’s original strata coaster history and was known for its 420-foot height and 120 mph launch.

Historical notes: Top Thrill 2 is the reimagined version of Top Thrill Dragster. The original ride closed after the 2021 season, and Cedar Point later brought the concept back with a new triple-launch experience, new trains, a backward launch, and a spike while keeping the massive 420-foot top hat.

Ride Experience

Top Thrill 2 is a short ride, but it is built around anticipation, height, and launch intensity.

Beginning: The ride begins with the first forward launch out of the station area. Instead of clearing the top hat right away, the train loses speed and rolls backward.

Main elements: After the rollback, riders launch backward up the vertical spike, then launch forward again toward the 420-foot top hat. The main thrill is the build-up through the three-launch sequence and the view as the train climbs the tower.

Finale: The final launch sends the train over the top hat and down the 400-foot drop before returning to the brake run.

Overall feel: Dramatic, intimidating, launch-focused, and very height-driven. It is not a long layout, but the launches and tower make it feel like a major event.

Who Should Ride This?

This coaster is a good fit for:

  • Experienced coaster riders
  • Thrill seekers who like extreme height
  • Launch coaster fans
  • Riders who are comfortable going backward
  • Cedar Point fans who want the park’s biggest thrill experience

This coaster may not be the best first choice for:

  • First-time coaster riders
  • Nervous riders who are afraid of heights
  • Riders who dislike launches
  • Riders who do not want to go backward
  • Anyone looking for a longer, traditional coaster layout

Parent and Family Notes

Top Thrill 2 is not a good first big coaster. It is better for riders who have already handled major coasters and are ready for extreme height, launches, and going backward.

For newer riders: This is an expert-level ride. A nervous rider should probably work up through other Cedar Point coasters first before attempting Top Thrill 2.

For parents: The minimum height requirement is 52 inches, so some younger riders may technically be tall enough but still not emotionally ready for the experience. The ride is very visible from the midway, which can make it exciting but also intimidating.

Comfort and accessibility notes: The ride uses over-the-shoulder restraints with lap bar-style positioning. Riders should check the test seat if they are concerned about fit or comfort.

Tips Before Riding

  • Best row: Front row if you want the biggest view and the most dramatic feeling of wind, height, and launch. Back row if you want the best view from the backward spike and the strongest airtime sensation going over the top hat. Both rows offer very different experiences, and many riders strongly prefer one over the other.
  • Best time to ride: Earlier in the day if wait times are reasonable, or at night for a more dramatic ride.
  • Loose articles: Secure all loose items before riding and follow Cedar Point’s posted loose article policy.
  • Line strategy: Ride early if it is a priority, because Top Thrill 2 can draw long waits.
  • Nervous rider tip: Do not make this your first major coaster. Work up to it with other Cedar Point thrill rides first.
  • Worth riding at night? Yes. The height, lights, and launch sequence can make it feel even more dramatic after dark.

CoasterSchool Verdict

Top Thrill 2 is one of Cedar Point’s biggest statement rides. It is fast, tall, dramatic, and visually intimidating, but the actual ride experience is more about launches, height, and anticipation than a long layout full of forces.

For thrill seekers, this is a must-ride at Cedar Point. For newer riders, it is something to work up to rather than something to start with.

Overall: Top Thrill 2 is an expert-level coaster experience built around height, launches, and pure anticipation.
