Should You Ride Millennium Force?
Millennium Force is one of those rides where the numbers can make it seem more extreme than the actual physical experience. It climbs 310 feet, drops 300 feet at 80 degrees, and reaches 93 mph, but it does so without inversions, launches, spinning, or the aggressive ejector airtime found on some smaller coasters.
For many riders, getting themselves onto the train and climbing the lift hill is harder than the ride itself.
Best For
Riders who are comfortable with Level 3 and lower Level 4 coasters and are ready to confront extreme height and speed without adding inversions or especially aggressive airtime.
Biggest Fear Factor
The height.
The lift climbs 310 feet above Cedar Point before the train drops 300 feet at 80 degrees. Riders have plenty of time to see how high they are getting, and the open trains make the climb feel especially exposed.
CoasterSchool Take
Millennium Force is visually one of Cedar Point’s most intimidating coasters, but we keep it at Level 4 rather than Level 5 because the actual ride experience is relatively straightforward.
The first drop is enormous and the speed is serious, but Millennium Force does not stack several advanced challenges together. There are no inversions, no launch, and very little of the aggressive ejector airtime or relentless pacing that defines Cedar Point’s Level 5 rides.
It can even feel more comfortable than Magnum XL-200, despite being over 100 feet taller, because Millennium Force’s track and transitions are much smoother.
This is an excellent example of why height alone does not determine a CoasterSchool level.

DID YOU KNOW?
Millennium Force introduced the world to the “giga coaster.”
When it opened in 2000, it became the first complete-circuit roller coaster to exceed 300 feet, creating an entirely new coaster category.
THE CABLE LIFT
Millennium Force’s 310-foot cable lift leads directly into a 300-foot drop at 80 degrees, accelerating the train to 93 mph.
Maximum rider height: 78 in.
What Millennium Force Feels Like
Millennium Force is primarily about scale and sustained speed. Its enormous first drop dominates the anticipation, while the rest of the ride consists of fast, sweeping elements rather than repeated aggressive forces.
The Cable Lift
Millennium Force uses a cable lift rather than a traditional chain, pulling the train up the 310-foot hill much faster than riders might expect.
The open view over Lake Erie makes the climb spectacular, but riders who struggle with height may find this to be the hardest part of the entire experience.
The First Drop
The train drops 300 feet at 80 degrees and reaches 93 mph.
The scale is enormous, but the transition into the drop is smooth. Riders typically experience the classic stomach-drop sensation rather than the sharper ejector airtime found on rides such as Steel Vengeance.
The Speed & Overbanked Turns
After the first drop, Millennium Force moves through large overbanked turns and sweeping elements while maintaining significant speed.
The ride reaches a 169-foot overbanked turn and later a 182-foot hill, emphasizing sustained speed and scale rather than rapid-fire elements.
The Tunnels & Finale
Millennium Force passes through two tunnels during its 6,595-foot layout. Moving into the tunnels at high speed briefly removes the visual reference points around the train, making the speed feel even more dramatic.
The final portion remains fast and sweeping before returning to the station rather than suddenly becoming much more aggressive.
COASTERSCHOOL RIDING TIPS
Tips for a Better Ride
Seat Choice
Millennium Force feels very different depending on whether you want speed and view or stronger pull over the drop.
- Front: Best sense of speed and the most open view down the 300-foot first drop
- Back: Stronger pull over the first drop and generally more noticeable airtime
Body & Restraint
Millennium Force uses an individual lap bar and seat belt across the thighs and pelvis.
- Sit naturally back in the seat and let the restraint hold you in position
- Unlike Magnum, there is much less need for special airtime technique because Millennium Force is smoother and more flowing
During the Ride
Millennium Force is more about height, speed, and sustained momentum than aggressive airtime.
- The 310-foot lift and first drop are usually the biggest psychological challenge
- Once you’re moving, the large turns and hills feel smooth and sweeping rather than sharp or violent
Watch the Millennium Force Ride Preview

Where Do You Go From Here?
Coaster progression isn’t a checklist. Choose the next ride based on what felt comfortable, or what still felt intimidating.
