Should You Ride Valravn?

Valravn is one of Cedar Point’s most visually intimidating rides. Riders climb more than 220 feet, approach the edge of a vertical drop, and are deliberately held there before being released straight down.

The good news is that once the first drop begins, the actual ride is very smooth. The three inversions are large and flowing, and the wide floorless trains make Valravn feel more controlled than its appearance might suggest.

Best For

Riders who are already comfortable with Level 3 coasters and are ready to confront a major drop, significant height, and smooth inversions.

Biggest Fear Factor

The hold over the first drop.

The train pauses at the edge before releasing riders down a 214-foot, 90-degree drop. That moment gives riders plenty of time to look straight down and anticipate what is coming.

CoasterSchool Take

Valravn is a good example of a coaster that can look scarier than it rides.

The height and vertical drop are serious challenges, but once the train releases, the ride is smooth and fairly predictable. Riders who handle the first drop well may find the rest of the coaster much easier than expected.

For someone whose biggest fear is height or steep drops, Valravn can be an important Level 4 confidence builder.

DID YOU KNOW?

From the right angle, Valravn’s track appears to spell “OHIO” across the skyline, a coincidence that has become a favorite detail among Cedar Point fans.

90° FIRST DROP

Valravn pauses riders over the edge before plunging 214 feet straight down at 90 degrees.

The coaster’s second major drop is 131 feet.

What Valravn Feels Like

Valravn is built around anticipation. The height and first drop dominate the experience, while the rest of the coaster is smooth, open, and relatively controlled.

The Lift Hill

The wide train climbs 223 feet above Cedar Point, giving riders a broad view of the park and Lake Erie.

Because the lift is exposed, riders who are uncomfortable with height may find the climb itself to be one of the hardest parts of the ride.

The Hold & First Drop

At the top, the train slowly approaches the edge and stops.

Riders are held looking downward before the brakes release and the train dives 214 feet at 90 degrees. The anticipation is intense, but the drop itself happens quickly and smoothly.

The Inversions

After the first drop, Valravn enters a huge 165-foot Immelmann, followed later by a dive loop and a zero-G roll for three total inversions.

These elements are much larger and smoother than the inversions on an older coaster like Corkscrew.

The Second Drop & Finale

A mid-course brake slows the train before another steep drop, giving riders a second dose of the dive-coaster experience.

The final portion adds airtime and a few last sweeping elements before returning to the station.

COASTERSCHOOL RIDING TIPS

Tips for a Better Ride

Seat Choice

Seat position changes whether Valravn feels more visually intimidating or more forceful.

  • Front row: Most exposed view during the hold, with nothing blocking the 90° drop below you
  • Back row: Less dramatic view, but a stronger pull as the train is dragged over the first drop

The outside seats can also feel especially exposed because of how wide the Dive Coaster trains are.

Body & Restraint

Valravn uses B&M’s vest-style over-the-shoulder restraints, so there is no hard restraint beside your head like on Raptor or Corkscrew.

  • Sit naturally back in the seat and let the vest hold you in position
  • No head-forward technique is needed; the restraint system leaves much more room around your head
During the Ride

The anticipation before the first drop is usually more intimidating than the ride itself.

  • The train pauses at the edge before dropping 90°
  • After the first drop, expect three smooth inversions and another large dive before the finale
