Should You Ride Iron Dragon?
Iron Dragon is one of Cedar Point’s best coasters for riders making the transition from beginner rides into bigger coaster experiences. The suspended trains hang underneath the track and swing naturally through the turns, introducing a completely different type of movement without requiring riders to face inversions, extreme height, or a huge first drop.
Best For
Riders comfortable with Cedar Creek Mine Ride who are ready for more speed and excitement but still want to avoid going upside down or confronting Cedar Point’s largest drops.
Biggest Fear Factor
The suspended seating and swinging cars can look intimidating. Because the train hangs below the track and moves from side to side through the turns, riders may initially feel less grounded than on a traditional coaster.
CoasterSchool Take
Iron Dragon is our recommended starting point for Level 3 at Cedar Point.
It feels noticeably bigger and faster than Cedar Creek Mine Ride, but the actual ride is smooth and approachable. The swinging trains introduce a new coaster sensation without stacking several advanced challenges together.
For riders who are nervous about inversions or major height, Iron Dragon is an especially useful place to build confidence before exploring Cedar Point’s other Level 3 options.

DID YOU KNOW?
Iron Dragon is one of only five operating Arrow suspended coasters remaining in the world.
SWINGING CARS
Iron Dragon’s cars hang underneath the track and swing freely from side to side through the turns, creating movement that feels very different from a traditional coaster.
There are no inversions.
What Iron Dragon Feels Like
Iron Dragon introduces more speed and a completely new kind of coaster movement, but its smooth pacing and lack of inversions keep the overall experience approachable.
The First Lift
The 76-foot lift creates more anticipation than Cedar Point’s beginner coasters, but it remains modest compared with the park’s major thrill rides.
The Swinging Cars
This is what makes Iron Dragon unique. Because the cars hang underneath the track, they swing outward naturally as the train moves through turns.
The swinging can make the ride feel faster and more dynamic without requiring extreme forces.
The Second Lift
Iron Dragon has two lift hills, splitting the ride into two distinct portions and helping create a longer experience than riders may expect from its relatively modest height.
The Lagoon Finale
The second half is the highlight. The train swings through turns close to the lagoon and surrounding terrain, making the 40-mph speed feel more dramatic because riders are moving close to the water and scenery. Cedar Point specifically highlights the ride’s swinging path over the lagoon.
COASTERSCHOOL RIDING TIPS
Tips for a Better Ride
Seat Choice
The middle of the train is a good starting point if you want the most balanced first ride.
- Front: More open view and easier to see turns coming
- Back: Can feel a little more active as the cars swing through turns
Body & Restraint
Iron Dragon uses over-the-shoulder restraints, but the ride itself is relatively gentle.
- Sit back comfortably and keep your head centered
- Let the suspended car swing naturally instead of fighting the motion
During the Ride
The swinging becomes more noticeable as the ride progresses, especially in the second half.
- There are two lift hills
- The low turns over the lagoon are some of the fastest and most exciting parts

Where Do You Go From Here?
Coaster progression isn’t a checklist. Choose the next ride based on what felt comfortable, or what still felt intimidating.
