Should You Ride Adventure Express?
Adventure Express is a great step up for riders who are comfortable with family coasters but are ready for faster turns, darker environments, and a ride that feels a little more unpredictable. At only 63 feet tall and 35 mph, the statistics aren’t intimidating, but the tunnels, sudden direction changes, and classic mine train movement make the experience feel more intense than the numbers suggest.
Best For
Riders ready for a more adventurous coaster experience with dark tunnels, quicker turns, themed surprises, and a little more side-to-side movement.
Biggest Fear Factor
The darkness and unpredictability are more intimidating than the height or speed. Several sections disappear into tunnels, and the ride’s quick turns can make it difficult to see exactly where you’re going next.
CoasterSchool Take
Adventure Express is a different kind of Level 3 than Racer. It isn’t as tall or fast, but its dark sections, abrupt turns, and older Arrow mine train feel introduce riders to a coaster that is less predictable and more physically active.

DID YOU KNOW?
Adventure Express received a major theming refresh when Kings Island opened Adventure Port in 2023. The project enhanced the coaster’s story, scenery, audio, and effects while incorporating Adventure Express into the storyline of the surrounding themed area.
2 Lift Hills
Adventure Express actually has two chain lift hills. The unusual second lift comes near the end of the ride inside the temple, turning what would normally be a simple trip back toward the station into one of the coaster’s most memorable scenes.
What Adventure Express Feels Like
Adventure Express feels more like a runaway mine train adventure than a traditional coaster built around big drops. Expect dark tunnels, quick turns, changing directions, and some classic mine train jostling along the way.
The Tunnels & First Lift
The adventure begins almost immediately with tunnels and themed scenery before reaching the first lift hill. The dark sections can make the ride feel faster because you can’t always see the track or upcoming turns clearly.
The Twisting Turns
After the first lift, Adventure Express spends much of the ride twisting close to the ground instead of climbing large hills. The train changes direction frequently, creating more side-to-side movement than airtime or stomach-drop sensations.
The Classic Mine Train Feel
Adventure Express is an older Arrow Dynamics mine train, so the transitions can feel more abrupt than those on a modern family coaster. Expect some bouncing and lateral movement through the turns, especially if you’re used to very smooth newer rides.
The Temple Finale
Near the end, the train enters a dark temple and begins climbing a second lift hill surrounded by figures, lighting, sound, and other effects. It can look intimidating, but there isn’t a giant surprise drop waiting at the top—the coaster is nearly finished once you escape the temple.
COASTERSCHOOL RIDING TIPS
Tips for a Better Ride
Seat Choice
Seat choice can change both how much you see and how much movement you feel.
- Front: Gives you the clearest view of the track, tunnels, and theming and can make the sudden turns easier to anticipate.
- Middle: A good choice for nervous riders looking for a balanced ride without emphasizing either end of the train.
Body & Restraint
Adventure Express uses lap-bar restraints and allows more upper-body movement than a coaster with shoulder restraints.
- Sit naturally with your back against the seat and let the lap bar keep you securely in place.
- Try not to stiffen your entire body before every turn; relaxing can make the mine train’s side-to-side movement more comfortable.
During the Ride
Adventure Express uses darkness and surprise more than extreme coaster elements to create excitement.
- Expect quick turns and tunnels, but there are no inversions, launches, or giant drops.
- Don’t let the dramatic second lift hill worry you, the temple sequence is the finale, not the setup for a huge final drop.
